As any major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
